If everyone did an import into their own projects those are all individual clips. Just because it's an import of the same file Avid does not consider it the same clip in general. It's why you batch import a sequence and don't just reimport the files from scratch.
I would assume that you took your online sequence from the producer and you batch imported based on that sequence. That would generate imported media that has the same metadata as the producers sequence and that would allow him to relink to your online clips.
Showing reference clips and deleting those clips doesn't do anything to the sequence. If you delete them and then go to bin setting and turn off show ref clips and then turn it back on you will see the same reference clips reappear.
How did you create your online media? I bet you batch imported from the producer's sequence.
