It's been a long time since I set up an Airspeed, but the files stored on the Airspeed are in a proprietary format (tmf?). You can't create them or copy them back off directly (in a useable format, anyway) - it all has to go through Transfer Manager.
The Transfer Manager executable should be running on the Airspeed itself. You install the Transfer Client software on your Avid (making sure the version you are installing is matched to your version of Media Composer). With the Transfer Client installed, you will find that a "Transfer" panel has been added to your Settings. The Transfer settings window has two tabs. The first allows you to configure how media is handled (rendering and audio mixing). The second tab is where you tell the Avid what Transfer Manager to talk to. You put the hostname of your Transfer Manager (the Airspeed) in there. If you don't have DNS set up (put simply if you can't ping the Airspeed by name) you should add the IP address and hostname of your Airspeed to the hosts file. The hosts file is at /etc/hosts on a Mac or at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts on Windows. There is stuff in there already, so just add a new line and copy the format. On a Mac, you'll need superuser privileges, so this is normally done in the terminal.
For precise details, though, I recommend stopping by the Avid Knowledgebase and downloading the documentation for your version of Airspeed. Or perhaps, since Avid have recently upgraded the obfuscation on their website to new levels of impenetrable (to the extent that it is now hard to find the knowledgebase, never mind finding docs on the knowledgebase), just Google it.
Hope that helps,
Ross

Okay, Im probably really reaching for the stars here, but does anyone know how to set up the Interplay Transfer client/Server for a standalone Avid Airspeed? I am able to use Telnet to FTP to the Airspeed and pull clips on and put them back however, they seem to be encoded in a proprietary format as the clips are no playable with any media player. I tried to configure an FTP server with the Interplay Configuration, but it asks for a default FTP directory and it seems that the AirSpeed OS is FreeBSD, so I don't know how the FTP folder structure is built by Avid there. THanks
