I would try to get them to go with MC 7 because it has the LUT support. This is very handily if they shoot something like LOG (very likely).
AMA which a transcode is the way to go. Mount your files, select the LUT, transcode to DNxHD 36. Edit away.
The advantages to AMA are primarily speed, Avid import / export is built on the Quicktime engine which is 32 bit single processor code. The Transcode engine in Avid much faster code. And it allows you to make selects if you have long takes that have a lot of wasted footage in them (Common in the file based universe)
For finishing, depending where you are going and what quality you need, you just relink to the original files and either finish there, or consolidate with handles to your finishing drives. If you are going to another system, then it will be either EDL or AAF.
