With the Ethernet adapter on a 5500/2 or 5800/2 deck, you can capture to SR
MXF from tape and layoff SR MXF to tape. I saw a demo of this when the /2
machines were coming out. I've never heard or seen anyone using that since,
so I don't know how far it's gone.
Supposedly though, in the SR MXF spec, there's allowance for resolutions
above HD. That would provide a tape archival solution for 2K, 4K, etc. -
but most of those have already gone LTO (without the need for the $100K
tape deck)…
