I'd tend to say, unless they were being deliberately reckless with it (and
putting a poorly labeled tape in doesn't seem to be - I'm sure many of us
have done it) then it's a cost you'd have to absorb. It's effectively
maintainence on the device. Hopefully your rental rates are crafted with
that sort of thing factored in.

Unfortunately bad things do happen to gear sometimes. I know some rental
houses (at least where I am) are able to purchase some type of insurance to
cover this sort of thing - I presume they factor the premiums into the
rental rates.
