Is it paving the way for a merging of the products, or providing an easy
path to Symphony ahead of a big improvement in differentiation between it
and Media Composer?
I have pointed out in a couple of places something I think is really big
though, as well as being a better featured product in terms of color
correction, this Symphony package also includes the BCC8 plugins, which add
a whole lot of great functionality and aren't included in the standard MC6
package.
I still think Avid would have a hard time killing off either Symphony or
MC. They have spent a lot of time branding Media Composer in the last
couple of years (rather than allowing it to be generically "Avid" as it was
to most), especially since they merged all their divisions into the single
Avid brand, so they invested a lot in the name Media Composer, but
similarly they and many customers have marketed Symphony as a premium
finishing product - to discontinue that might have a negative impact for
Avid and some clients who differentiate their MC and Symphony suites.
But of course these are the troubles that Avid has to deal with. None of
the competitors that I can think of have two products that are so similar
yet differentiated in the way the Symphony and MC are. They sort of need to
become one (even if it's MC and "Symphony" is like a purchasable add-on
like ScriptSync or something) or Symphony needs to really get ramped up a
bit and become a different class of product like it once was.
Either way - if I were looking to upgrade an old Avid (the offer goes all
the way back to Xpress DV - basically anything post-Meridian) or FCP
license I'd definitely be taking this offer now.
