[Avid-L2] Avid Percent of NLE sales compared to FCP

Continuing Philip's discussion of the amount of NLE sales of Avid, I tried to do some research to confirm his statements, but I didn't get too far. Maybe Philip is a better auditor than me. Years sitting in an edit chair have dulled my accounting skills.

Philip, I can not find a specific direct percentage or sales figure number for MC/Symphony/DS in the 10Q document. Not sure where you're coming up with the numbers. I see percentages for video products, audio products and services... Where is the specific breakdown of NLE sales you are citing?

Plus, as I pointed out in my earlier post, without Media Composer or Newscutter or DS or Symphony, the rest of Avid's product line would die an immediate and sorry death, because they're all tied to the core NLEs.

However, when they killed Apple's NLE, the rest of the company continues unimpeded by the loss. FCP doesn't mean anything when selling iTunes music, iPhones, iPads and iPods. It probably has a VERY small effect on selling MacBookPros and MacPros. We may have to circle back on this if Apple ever releases REAL sales numbers for FCP X. I bought it the first day, so I know there's at least 1 sale. Of course, many asked for their money back... I would have, but I'm enjoying my new toy in some ways.

This is similar to my professional situation. I've written four books. The amount of money that they've generated - despite their success - barely earns me minimum wage for the years it took to write them. However, I have landed consulting and training gigs from those books that more than makes up for it, so even though my book earnings are a miniscule portion of my annual income, they actually end up generating something close to half of my income incidentally. (Please don't tell my publisher though, or they'll ask me to pay them for writing the next book.)

I'd love to be proved wrong on this, and I'm not saying I'm a business major. I've been sitting in a dark room surrounded by glowing monitors for 25 years and it may have killed my business sense.
