Exactly!
iMovie 11 currently has a lot of power and could easily gain more functions. I looked at the price difference -- $20 vs $350 -- and concluded that for tasks that one doesn't need MC for, iMovie works fine. For example:
I took a sample of video from JVC's new 1920x1080p60 video camera and scaled it in FCP by 200% and exported a ProRes and AIC samples of "4K2K."
Then I imported the ProRes file into iMovie 11, which accepted it without a problem. Of course my iMac cannot play more than a second. It can be skimmed, however.
Then I used a Ken Burns FX to move a 1920x1080 window within the 3840x2160 frame. I also used a Crop to 1920x1080. I exported as a 1920x1080p60 ProRes movie. Worked perfectly. This is how 4K2K sources can be used in our HD world.
I exported a 3840x2160 ProRes movie with no problem. It included 3D transitions and a 3D spinning globe with clouds. This 4K2K movie looks as it should.
I also imported the AIC 4K2K file into iMovie (because most iMovie owners will not have ProRes). I exported a 3840x2160 AIC movie with no problem. This 4K2K movie looks as it should.
PS: I assume JVC will supply a utility that will pull quarter-HD movies from 4 SD cards and stitch into a 3840x2160 movie. This where the conversion to ProRes or AIC may be done.
