[Avid-L2] Re: handheld RED footage looks soft -- common complaint?

 

Motion blur may be the culprit. There may also be some extra smoothing done in the camera to get around the CMOS rolling shutter issues (I'm not sure on that one). Remember that resolution in pixels does not equate to perceived sharpness. There is no detail enhancement in this camera, like there would be with an F900, for instance.

In order to get maximum sharpness in the conversion out of raw, make sure debayering is set to Full and dial in OLPF compensation to taste. I have also seen complaints on RedUser that for whatever reason, conversion through RedCine-X (software only) is sharper than using the RedRocket accelerator card. I don't know if that's true or if these complaints have been verified.
