also a matter of being creative NOW. Ever have a client ask for
something "you've always wanted to try but never was allowed"- well
generally I don't have a stockpile of creative stuff floating around in
my head waiting for someone to ask for it. What I do have is
experience, fair judgment and sometimes good taste, which allows me to
"borrow" and adapt ideas from myself and others. Some of the best art
directors are not great artists, but great collaborators and problem
solvers. Some talent will find its way out if you give them enough
exercises. But there's no substitute for being in the room with the
clients and solving (or watching someone solve) the problems of the day.
That's how I learned.
