Really?
So the global culture becomes a wasteland of youTube videos made from people's phones? Is that what's on all the HDTV's with surround sound in people's homes -- the homes you feel today's younger generation has to be pried out of with a crow bar?
If the best storytellers in the world can't make a living doing it then they won't do it. And do you really see a culture without that?
Yes, some sort of realignment is happening. And it's not all for the bad. Star salaries are crumbling. This is a good thing. And what all this looks like in the brave new world of New Media (now not so new anymore) and premium entertainment is anyone's guess.
But color me naive, human beings are at their core story telling and story receiving vessels. Those amongst us who are the best at it and can connect to large groups of people will always be valued. And somehow they will be rewarded for that. I don't pretend to know what it will look like but I do know that there will always be a place for that in a healthy culture (Where the U.S. stands in that regard is a subject for a whole 'nother discussion).

You aren't watching the kids these days. Can you make money on a tent pole film? Yes, right now. Does the studio make enough in theatrical to pay for their movies? No in general, it's the aftermarket sales that get them their.
I know how you feel, I'm the same way, but I really don't se how you are going to convince a kid to leave the HD tv with surround sound at home that he is watching a torrent downloaded version of 2012 on, to go spend 15 bucks to see it in a theater. Besides, he is also surfing the web on his laptop and talking to his buds on iChat at the same time.
So you see, he IS actually enjoying that "group experience" in his living room. It's a new world and the new generations are using it differently than we would.
