Many years back (when I lived in Australia) I was doing an article for
an Oz magazine on "offline is dead" because we were just getting the
ability to finish uncompressed on a desktop system. I was pretty gung
ho about that idea and ready to write off "offline" until I posted for
thoughts on the Avid-L (and others, but their responses were not
useful).

I became convinced that "offline" as a technical necessity was, in
fact, probably 'dead', but that "offline" as a state of mind was
definitely alive and well. Offline is about storytelling; online about
technical accuracy.

I ultimately wrote a follow up article on why "offline" was alive and
well - coining the term for what Curtis is describing as "multi-line"
- focus on storytelling; color correction; audio; titling etc one pass
(focus) at a time.
