Re: [Avid-L2] Semi OT: Back up drives

My personal favorite was the post house that kept its master in a fireproof room. Building burnt down fire safe was fine.
Inside was a pool of melted tapes.

Re: [Avid-L2] Semi OT: Back up drives

True that.  I worked with a production company that had their 1 inch master tapes in cheap storage.  Basically in a basement.  You know those fully enclosed cement rooms, kinda sounds like a description of a pool without the plaster of course.  Guess what when the above water pipe broke it acted just like a pool.  Think of it like a hot tub without hot water, no peacocks and far from Marin county.  The only think that went swimming were all the 1 inch masters along with some 2 inch audio and probably some 3/4, DAT and Beta Sp in the mix.  Guess who wishes they had better storage and multiple locations?

Hey all -

In the early planning stages of doing a 60 minute doc. I am backing every camera card up to one or two drives for safe keeping. Any suggestions on what products are best for this? Won't be editing off them, just as safety backups. This is not for long term back up (yet, the producer will have to decide that after we are done), just for safety during edit. Thanks in advance.

Has BlackMagic made an adaptor box for Prius to HDSDI yet?  :-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Semi OT: Back up drives

This has more to do with workflow / philosophy than with technical stuff.
I find myself using a shitload of USB 3 portable drives.
(Toshiba Canvio basics, they run 100 MB / sec, 50 bucks for a terrabyte.)
I think twice on seperate locations is better than one more decent backup in one location.
(And yes, I also use LTO...)

But, all depends on budget and workflow.

Re: [Avid-L2] Semi OT: Back up drives

I have a USB3 double dogdish thing that holds 2 bare SATA drives. Works
well so far. Two advantages over USB3 drives in an enclosure: no
additional cables, the bare drives are much less likely to wander off
because they don't look useful. --J.B.
