You can also try RepairSequences in the console.
If none of this work. Hide the Avid MediaFiles folder by adding a letter to its name and create a title, saving it to the drive in question. It should create a new Avid MediaFiles folder with a #1 folder inside.. Then drag all the media to that new #1 folder. Then let the .mdb and .pmr files get recreated.

__bg.1 is indeed created by background rendering (numbers might increment similar to numbers on folders in MXF-folder)
