A sidecar file is VERY common in broadcasting, and often mandatory..

It used to be either a .890 or a .PAC file, but that has probably changed.

You have to ask the broadcaster what they want. (Be VERY afraid of EBU STL, there are a lot of bastard formats around.)

Then, you ask your subtitle company for a TC zero based SRT (with metadata for positioning) or a Subcap compliant file for QC.

(Srt with metadata is good for VLC, subcap of course for Avid.)

You CANNOT control size / font / color, that is done by the broadcaster to make things uniform.

Position is a 'hit and miss' situation.

Then, you only control text, line breaks and sometimes alignment.

Bouke (Who knows a shitload about subtitling, but has no clue if subs can be embedded in IMF.)

Now we are delivering UHD and HD that is 4 masters to wrangle.

Seems like we should try to migrate to a sidecar file for the subtitles, so I'm interested to know how that is working for folks in the real world. And is this something made easier with IMF?

How do you review the resultant file? eg is there a play this version of IMF with subtitles?

Also how to control subtitle sizing so that the sizing is correct (4:3 safe, over 1 or 2 lines, reposition to avoid areas of screen etc)?
