As I have repeatedly posted over the years, "I HATE FONTS!!!" Your issue is the main reason I hate fonts. In my experience it's not the location of the font but something more to do with the metadata of the font. I have TransType Pro both a Mac and a PC version and it allows the conversion of PC fonts to Mac and Vice Versa.
In theory IIRC OTF fonts should work on either OS and the same may be true with TTF fonts but I've never locked down all the facts and factors. What I can see in Transtype Pro is for a given font there are parameters like menu name and family name and a few others. Sometimes I find that I can only see one font in a font family in title tool. I load only one font from the family and I can see it in the title tool but it's there under the font family name not the specific version of the font, e.g. "bold", "italics" etc... If I load a second font from the family I still only see one choice in title tool and I don't know which of the two now loaded fonts it is.
Recently I worked on a PC Avid and the offline was done on Macs. I needed the fonts from offline which they gave me. I think they were OTF. I ran into the same aforementioned problem. I could only see one font from the family. The next day the other online editor's on the project got engineering to modify the fonts so all the various versions would be seen in title tool. I don't know what program they used but I know if I loaded the fonts on a mac I saw all the different font variations but that didn't happen on a PC. I was told that once the IT guy modified the fonts they still had to use font substitution on the PC to point to the correct version of the font.
I've asked for years about this stuff on this list and others but never found a Font Guru who could open their Font Tree of knowledge and enlighten me. Thus I maintain my status of hating fonts for the foreseeable future.

Anyone know how Avid chooses the fonts it will see in title tool? For years I have come across situations where client wants a font and Avid won't see it even though its in my system. OTF and TTF both. But the Avid title tool does not list it. Why is this and where does avid look for fonts in a Mac system? Its the only creative app I know that does not use all the fonts in your computer.
Verdana is a common font in all Macs for sure. Yet my MC can not see it and I have both .otf and .ttf. Of course this is the clients chosen font.
