I've had problems in the past trying to transcode very long RED clips when linked via AMA. Seen this with 36 minute long clips, which would use up all available memory and then hang when trying to transcode (and even when trying to play later sections of the clip.) Probably depends on how much RAM you have. If possible, I'd ask the shooters to keep shot lengths to something more manageable.

You can do it in Avid. I would recommend one of the HDR project settings - you can still transcode to low-bandwidth that makes it easy to work with. However, you should know, depending on your set-up, it could take a long time. I've got two systems. It took almost 25 hours to transcode a 44 minute interview on a MacPro 3.1 with 48g RAM. MC 8.6.8 Went MUCH faster on a 5.1 12 core with the same RAM, but, I'm sure you know, docs are a lot of footage.
