The Arri Alexa Mini really encourages not sending audio to the camera. The audio in is a new/uncommon 5-pin Lemo connector that's stereo line-level. And it's on the front of the camera. It's not the "standard" 5-pin Lemo common for timecode input. Can only control audio level through menus, no monitor/headphone output. Not really audio friendly, shall we way.
But now there are a few XLR adapters and on the market (A-Box and MozeGear for two) and you can build a Lemo-to-XLR (or 3.5mm or whatever) adapter cable. But since this connector is only useful for the Alexa Mini and the connectors remain hard to find, the cable or box is something the camera house or owner should supply. Odds of a location soundie having one are kinda slim.
TC in is through a "standard" 5-pin Lemo. So jamming TC to the Mini is no big deal. Did you get TC John?
A popular camera, and people want to keep using it in situations where it might not be the best choice. So I've been forced to keep up on this.
A long-winded way of saying that IME it's EASY to create video-only files on the Alexa Mini. It's kinda designed for that.
I'm pretty sure I have all this right...

Got some media shot on Arri Mini. Links into Avid MC 8.5.3 fine but I noticed there are no audio tracks. The shoot had second system audio but not even a camera mic for some sync help? I get that a lot of times they don't have the time to feed mixer audio back to the cameras but even a cam mic helps. Oh well I didn't realize you can shoot video only without any audio tracks at all. Even if the audio tracks had no information I would think there would be at least a couple of tracks on the clip when ama linked but all I see is V1.I never get on the business end of cameras these days. Can someone confirm it is possible that an Arri Mini could record prores 4444 clips that have no audio tracks? I'm hoping this is the case and there isn't something whacky going on with the Avid linking. We've done plenty of Arri work in the past but of late mostly Varicam 35.John Moore Barking Trout Productions Studio City, CA bigfish@pacbell.net
