If you are talking about the file system used for Unity/ISIS/Nexis the big advantage is the virtual volumes, or workspaces. So you make a big drive pool and that's your max size. Within that you can make mountable workspaces that you can resize on the fly as needed. It's actually very useful. But usually the most useful when you have multiple projects going on at the same time and you are trying to keep the media separated from one another and the projects have different end dates and new projects start up before other ones are done.
