The grey text selection is expected behaviour. It's the way the text is hightlighted. You drag your subclip onto the grey selection.
You should not see any script marks, though. You should see a thumbnail and a line, the latter spanning the length of the text you selected. If you need to make this line shorter or longer (selecting less or more lines of text), CTRL-drag the end or start of the line up or down. If you do create any script marks, you can CTRL-drag them across the text as well.
Also, under the Script menu, select 'Interpolate Position', so that the position you click is taken into account, rather than the nearest script mark.
