Here's more info on Apples AV Foundation. Which does of course only mention QT 7 APIs as deprecated.
However Apple has a history of making changes and killing technologies. I still stand my recommendation to not use a proprietary wrapper or codec for long term archiving. And I especially won't rely on Apple for an eye to what the industry needs going forward. For Apple its all about what Apple thinks we all need.
The PC side is an issue but that's more because others have relied on Apple and QT rather than find a more robust solution.
