Re: [Avid-L2] Adobe Media Encoder won't launch?

Yeah - I wasn't thinking about the long GOP situation. I guess then I'd just mixdown to DNxHD and then transcode the file outside MC to XDCAM.

I'm on WIN, and Avid bitches that long GOP media can't be exported SAS…

I normally use export to XDcamHD. Nice thing is that  the header is written first, so I can start the transcode right after the export.
(But that does not apply to John…)

Yeah you know me, I *never* do custom QT exports from MC. Too painful.

When you do your final mixdown, do it to XDCAM 50. Then export your QT Ref with your 16 tracks, and do a Save As Self-Contained.

No custom exporting from MC or QT - too flaky in my book. I only ever do Same As Source from MC, or QT Ref and then Save As in QT Pro.

I tried to bring in the AAF a 2nd time while in the 59.94 project but it realized that media already existed because the sequence came in with the 24 frame audio tracks.  Perhaps if I removed the original audio stems it would forget they already existed but I think the AAF is inherently 23.976 so as you say maybe I could ask for a 2nd 59.94i aaf.  I know many people work with .wav stems but in our facility the aaf path has been the easiest conduit between protools and Avid.

I think some of my steps although convoluted sounding in practice are relatively quick.  In lieu of all the audio mixdowns or second aaf I just make an audio only sequence while in the 59.94 project and then go back to my 23.976 project and open that bin.  Opening that sequence Avid updates the sequence back to 23.976 and I can export out a QT Ref of the audio that cuts into the video output I've already exported.  In QT Pro it doesn't care about the time base in this case and I guess it just sees the audio as samples.

Now assuming I did get a 59.94i mixdown and I did do audio mixdowns of all the tracks so I could in theory export out of Avid to an XDCam50 .mov the problem would still remain that when I go to do the custom QT export, which I have to do to get the XDCam50 codec, I won't have a choice in the custom settings for 16 tracks of audio so I'm still left with a QT Ref path to maintain the 16 discrete audio tracks.  I'm basing this on what I have already mentioned in the thread about the audio option limitations I see in the custom QT engine that Avid calls up when exporting to custom.  Perhaps if I did my video mixdown in the 59.94 project to XDCam 50 then I could do a Same As source export which would allow choosing direct for the audio.  That could possibly work but I would end up with interleaved audio that I would have to break out with the QT Map utility from Video toolshed but that again can get messy.

I appreciate all the suggestions and now that I have a workflow that at least works I will see what steps I can incorporate to simplify this process.  It does seem much more problematic than it would seem.

I would just suggest bringing the audio in to the 59.94 project. Or pass it through Pro Tools or Audition to switch the AAF frame rate. The audio being the only thing holding this up is crazy - I know the mixdown prompt is dumb. You could (alternately) do multiple mixdowns, one of each audio track, and replace each audio track with its mixdown. A little time consuming but not too bad.

I have resorted to doing this in Avid but I can't export 16 channels of discrete audio because avid views the audio stems as 23.976 sources and forces me to mixdown the audio tracks to stereo on export.  Even if I remove all the video except the video mixdown done in the 59.94i project it still requires a audio mixdown because the protools stems are for my 23.976 online project so it sees mixed frame rate.  That's why I have to do the separate audio only export.

I have to create a QT .mov with 16 tracks of discrete audio.  The only way I can attempt that is to send to QT with a custom format set to XDCam50 60i but then in the audio settings there is no choice for 16 tracks of audio.  There is a laundry list of choices all about various surround sound layouts etc...  I rarely export directly out of avid but at this point in the custom export setting I'm in the QT Pro engine.  I know in other situations using QT Pro stand alone I've seen the choice of "12 Discrete" or something like that but I don't get that here so I can't go directly out of Avid.  If I export to XDCam mxf that limits the audio to 8 tracks and it's not a QT .mov file.

Now the only way around the mixed frame rate due  to the protools stems being correctly in 23.976 to match the actual sequence would be to do an audio mixdown of each of the 16 tracks which just gets out of hand and I'd rather do my audio only QT Ref export and marry in QT Pro.

Bottom line is I can't get an XDCam 50 .mov to export with 16 tracks of audio.  I get your method of starting the mixdown at 1:00:00:00 in the 23.976 project to avoid the A frame issue at 1;00;00;00.  I have worked around that issue by just nipping 2 frames of the top of the mixdown when in the 59.94I project after I have made a second mixdown in the 59.94i project.  I see no way around the second mixdown as so far I don't see a way to get the 16 tracks directly out of Avid.  I am running SNDX 6.5.4.7 and in the crunch haven't had a chance to see if 8.5.2 will offer more export flexibility.

The big hang up is the audio and I even tried doing a video mixdown to XDCam50 but then Avid won't export a QT Reference from a non I frame codec.

I even tried to reimport the aaf from Protools with my mix stems while in the 59.94 project but Avid saw through that and said that media already existed.

For all the roundtripping through all your apps, I would think it would be easier overall to do all of this right in MC.

Finish sequence (no bars slate or anything extra)
Duplicate
Mixdown 23.976p sequence
Open 59.94i project
Open bin from 23.976p project
promote 23.976p sequence to 59.94i
change start TC of sequence to 1;00;00;00
add filler at start
drop in bars, slate, tone, etc.
export XDCAM MXF

Everything lines up correctly and you've got solid cadence.

First off I don't think that post was about you.  There seems to be a spam bot making robot responses.  Your second question is very valid.  Adobe Media Encoder I have.  Sorenson I don't think I have at work.  I say I don't think because I'm pretty sure we upgraded to Symphony 6.5 with a Production Bundle so I bet I have a serial number related to that for whatever current version of Sorenson there was back then.

I'm using AME because I found it could add pulldown to DNX 175X files in the past.  Because we have adopted a 23.976 workflow I am now facing the challenge of adding Pulldown to deliver a 59.94I file.  Adding to the challenge is the sequence has 16 tracks of audio and it includes mixed frame rates so I have to export the video QT Ref separately with a stereo audio mixdown and then export an audio only sequence as a QT ref without checking audio mixdown.  I can then marry the 16 discrete audio tracks with the Video QT ref using QT Pro 7.  That just happens to be the devil I know for that part of the process.  Now because I'm making myself more familiar with AME I then take that QT Ref into AME and back to XDCam50 having AME add pulldown.  The problem is the resulting file is non drop frame and I have to deliver a drop frame file.  This is where I'm running into obstacles trying to change the time code to drop frame.  The other subtle issue that crops up is that now the network demands, for no apparent reason other than stubbornness,  that we have a full  minute of bars and tone.  Sounds easy but when you factor in how starting a 58;30;00 drop frame the resulting pull down addition in Avid no longer falls on an A frame at one hour.  The result is the A frame is now at 1;00;00;02.  Visually not the end of the world but when the slate and first frame now fall on a C frame there are split frame issues that the QC folks have a field day with.

Now I would welcome any advice regarding Sorenson.  I've used it in the past but never got deep into it.  Will it allow me to take an Avid QT Ref DNX_175X with 16 tracks of audio and spit out a Quicktime wrapped .mov in XDCam50 422 with drop frame time code.  And if so how does it handle pulldown given what I already mentioned above?

Why in particular is AME being used,

Thanks for the tip.  So today I come in and everything baked out properly in AME 2015.  I restart to my normal drive with the problem AME 2014.  After restart I launch AME and it gets up to the QTBundle thingy and stops then after about 10 second voila it opens up with all my existing presets still in place.  That's good but WTF happen yesterday.  I restarted sooooo many times and reinstalled what could possible explain with all the stuff I tried it didn't launch yesterday?

Subject: [Avid-L2] Adobe Media Encoder won't launch?

Okay this is an Avid forum but now that I'm incorporating Adobe Media Encoder into my workflow, as others here do, I figure it's a good place to ask how to fix AME.  I plan on getting in touch with Adobe Chat support tomorrow but here's the problem.

I am exporting Avid 23.976 QT Ref files with DNX-175X media and 16 channels of audio.  Then  I use Adobe Media Encoder to add pulldown and bake XDCAm50 422 QT files with 16 channels of audio.  This has been working great although occasionally AME just drops an audio track or 4 on export.  A reexport with the same setting and the audio is all there.  Tonight a last minute QC note came in after I had started baking out four files that was going to take 7 hours according the AME.  I hit quit on AME and I got a prompt about if I wanted to quit.  I clicked yes and AME churned for 30 seconds and then quit.  I then went into Avid and remade all four QT ref files with the final pixel fix.  Once all that was done I went to launch AME but it stalled at "Loading Exporter QuickTimeHost Bundle.  I forced quit retried but again a stall.  Sometime is stalled there and other times it got to loading a user/desktop/folder name etc... which looked like the desktop folder I had the QT Ref files in when I quit out earlier as mention.

I restarted several times, rebuilt permissions, and uninstalled and reinstalled AME twice, once keeping preferences and the 2nd time not keeping preference.  Nothing got it to launch.  I launched Photoshop without issue and after googling tried holding down shift while launching AME as some threads said that would clean AME's slate when launching.  Nothing worked.

Finally I went to a second startup drive with AME 2015 and fortunately that worked although I had to rebuild my presets.

Anybody know any tricks besides uninstalling or holding shift down, I think the shift trick might be for PCs and not macs but I don't really know.  I saw people talk about reinstalling Premiere Pro or maybe even after effects but I didn't get to that because I had to get the files cooking.  My last two attempts at launching the 2014 AME seemed to stall at the QuicktimeHost Bundle stuff.  I'm wondering if that is some core part of the Adobe programs they may have become corrupted.  I don't know what I could have done as I haven't added any plugins from the time it was working till it stopped.

Tomorrows another day and I'll just call the 24 hour come right to your door Adobe support swat team, oh wait this is Adobe so I'm basically on my own.  HELP!!!!!  ;-)
