Re: [Avid-L2] File transfers?

They've rebranded as sync to get away from the bad image of torrent. It's just using the same udp engine but point to point or point to multiple points - but all explicitly shared much like Dropbox. The main advantage over FTP etc is it cuts out a hop as it goes my computer to you computer with no cloud/server/Dropbox/transfer pool in between. You'll still be tied to the slowest connection (mine or yours) for the sync of course but that limitation would be there for one leg either way.

Lastly the torrent engine allows multiple one to many connections like sharing a folder on your computer.

Aren't torrents designed to optimize mass distribution, i.e. one file going to many users?  I don't see how a torrent offers any advantage sending a file point-to-point.  Also, it's my understanding that the incentive for a user to become a seeder is that they want access to the file(s) - why would people create a swarm for you if you're only sending encrypted video files for your own eyes?

Did you try the torrent-based system? That struck me as very interesting. Was thinking about experimenting with it. The MPAA doesn't like torrent because it's traditionally used for piracy, of course, so I'm not sure we'll actually be able to use it, but though it would at least be worth an experiment.
