I like the dongles because of their simple portability, and we're not allowed to have our systems connected to the internet. Obviously they can be lost or stolen, which could be considered a disadvantage.
I haven't used the online licenses much so can't say if they're better. For our adobe software licenses I have to connect the edit bays once every 3 months (99 days) in order for the license not to time out. Not sure about Avid.
