well, BBC and EBU were blabbing years ago about how much more efficient the compression is for 720p material. In the end, they settled for 1080.
As for ownership, BBC technology department is fully owned by the germans at SIEMENS. It was purchased back in 2004 for 3 bil. euros.

That is cool info - I did not know the BBC was so thorough with actual customers. There are many local news broadcasts that still shoot; or post their shows in 16:9 SD (Extended Definition); the aspect ratio fooling viewers as when both flat screens and 16:9 was in Best Buy simply stretching an SD pic.
