Re: [Avid-L2] Re: HP Z820 -- HP T-Bolt Card -- AJA Io 4k

One of those workarounds to get balanced audio is to use the AJA HD10AMA HD/SD 4-Ch Analog Audio Embedder / Disembedder.  Been using it with my 3g for a little while now and it's been solid despite the cost.  It also includes 2x hdsdi outs that I use to send to both my monitor and tek scope.

As a follow-up to this thread, in case anyone else is wondering, the AJA Io 4k is indeed compatible with the HP Z820 and Z840 Workstations when used in conjunction with HP's Thunderbolt 2 PCIe Card.  Not surprisingly, the Io 4k is also compatible with HP's line of Thunderbolt 2-enabled Laptop Workstations.

While it is true that the Kona 4 card offers higher framerate/resolution options, by virtue of being internally installed in an 8-lane PCIe bus slot (as opposed to via Thunderbolt 2 which has lower bandwidth), there are some other differences that might resonate with some users.

More specifically, at the time of this writing (before NAB 2015), neither the Kona 4 card nor its K3G Breakout Box offer an HDMI Input (as a capture format) or discrete Balanced Analog Audio Outputs.  There is one pair of a Unbalanced Audio Outputs on the Breakout Box -- but absolutely no Balanced Audio Ouputs.

The Io 4k does offer an HDMI Input as well as 8-channels of Balanced Analog Audio Outputs that are accessible by connecting an optional TASCAM-style Breakout Cable (~$80 USD) to the Io 4k's DB25 port.  Additionally, the Io 4k offers the same one pair of Unbalanced Analog Audio Outputs on its back panel.

It is worth mentioning that neither of these products have any provision for Analog Audio Inputs -- balanced or unbalanced.  There are a number of available work-arounds for this limitation.

Of course, this may or may not change come NAB.  At the very least, one would hope that both products would be upgraded to include HDMI 2.0.

Hope this helps.
