Just to follow up on your question John.
I'm on 8.2 and this morning my Application Manager showed an update for 8.2, the exact same version I'm running right now. I checked the More Info link and the update is in fact for 8.3. It also says that no uninstall is necessary, just click update. So I did and 15 minutes later I'm fully updated to 8.3.
My understanding is that if you are not on v. 8 you must do a full uninstall/install. If you are already on v.8, no uninstall is necessary, you can use the patch or use Application Manager.
The confusing part is that Application Manager said that the update was for 8.2 when it was for 8.3.

Was it 8.2 that required 8.1 to be installed? I remember asking why 8.2 wasn't a full install on the Mac version when traditionally mac installers were always full installs but I never really understood why that release was different. Now it looks like 8.3 is a full install for both mac and windows. Is there a rhyme or reason to what is a full installer and what is a patch release these days?
