There's no physical masking in Digital Cinema. The scalers and projectors have presets built in for either 2.39:1 or 1.85:1.
Even in the film days with a DI, you would mask before filmout.

Sounds like the Screen Mask was not tight enough. Should have been cropped to the shortest height if I understand the typical masking expectations in film.
