I get the idea and yes when I was in my 20s plotting rms values and asking who had eaten 6dB of my biscuits i would have dug deeper.

But it's digital samples here, digital samples there, d-a an inch from the speaker... Where's the danger in this none existent extra signal strength? We're not blowing up gpo lines with signal that isn't there...

Try to consider it this way.
Plot on some graphpaper digital samples of value. 0,128,255,255,128,0
Assuming just 8 bit that would be a 0db peak. But pencil in the actual waveform and beyween the 255 ,255 samples it has to be higher. The digital signal isn't clipped but potentially the analogue conversion could be. Thats what the true peak value represents.
