I've got a very old GeForce GTS250 in my home Z400. Been running Avid on it with no problems for years, although it's obviously not officially supported. I'm currently on Version 7.0.3 with Symph option using nvidia driver version 311.06. Windows 7 pro. 16GB ram etc etc. Never had a problem, so it can be done for cheaps. Obviously performance-wise I can do better, but happily using a non-quadro card in a pc.

The Mac and the PC handle the graphic card in different ways, and Avid supports whatever is supported by OSX, while it's not quite the same on Windows, a Quadro only land; that said, if You don't have 1000 bucks for an high end Quadro, please do Yourself a favour and consider a 500 euro Quadro K2000 or even a 170 euro K600 (figures should be lower in US $), and stay away from the old, still on sale, non K cards, they're slightly cheaper and way less powerful than their K counterpart.
