And they wanted flatscreen TV's because it meant getting rid of the ugly large tube taking up half of the living room. Not because they were HD. They happend to be HD - and HD might have been an additional marketing tool. Consumers are more geared to convenience than to pure quality. Look at any products in the supermarket.

Again, if they need a new TV and the new TV models are 4K, they will get a 4K TV. Will they pay a premium to receive 4K channels from their cable company? I doubt it. Will they stream 4K from Netflix and iTunes if available: I think so. Would they be able to tell the difference between the 4K and the HD stream? No. See John Galt's article. It's just perceivable unless they have a screen bigger than their walls - which has too low a Wife Acceptancy Factor to be really popular, IMHO.

I made the comparison with SACD: a (very) small group of enthusiasts liked the improved quality and invested in gear and content. Most others went with MP3, as they needed a lot of tracks on a small device, quickly accessible. The comparison with 96K and 192K makes a little sense as well. Yes, some folks are recordin production sound at 96K, but it is the exception rather than the rule - most any production I know records dialogue at 48K. 192K processing is great during sound post, but most consumers are not demanding 96K or 192KHz audio delivered to their homes in any way. And they would most certainly not pay a premium for it.

Another one: the Laserdisc had VHS beat by a long shot, offering content in orignal aspect ratio and with superior sound. But consumers only went to collecting movies once they could have an entire movie on a single disc (DVD), without the need to change sides or discs.

I make these comparisons because NOT ALL quality improving technologies have been broadly adopted by the general public.
