Also, to the poster's original question- don't down-rez before editing, imho. Work in a finishing-quality codec, like DNx or ProRes, then convert to your target format for delivery when you're done editing.
If you don't have enough storage, buy a small raid, like a g-raid mini (less than $250,) so you have enough storage room and speed to work at a 'full' resolution. This will also work for transporting between the system you're 'borrowing' for transcoding.
While your current deliverable is SD and online, your client may want something more later - and you'll have it. You generally get much nicer looking compressed video when down-converting from a higher-resolution. As a bonus, Color correction and VFX are much easier in HD.
