That is one of the odd things about the symphony dongle- it won't run a media composer. Kinda annoying.
As far as the theory about dumping the product, that's just silly. There's no real physical 'inventory' since it's a digital download, so whats to dump? They're very likely just trying to repeat the success of last year's competitive upgrade. I'm sure the emphasis is on getting users from FCP, and burying more adrenalines and meridiens.
Also, David C. Has clearly said on this forum that the need for upgrading the symphony color corrector has their attention. I'm not sure how much more he can say, nor can I find his specific email, but it was beyond 'implication.' Let's hope Avid development teams work as fast as the teams at black magic.

However, going forward, I would not want to be on the short-end of the stick in terms of NEW features -- if Avid ever gets around to actually differentiating the products in a meaningful way.

Because, at least in the near term, I'd be paying $1k for the only two differentiating features separating MC and Symphony -- and I can't use one of them -- and, as much as I really respect and appreciate the time-saving capabilities of the other, it doesn't offer the features my clients require.
