Maybe the compromise is to do what Avid has always done well - leave the interface, since Avid feels it's needed to "unify" the UI - but add two simple keyboard shortcuts, while the Mix window is active to MUTE and SOLO from the keyboard - maybe that already exists... I don't use it. But a keyboard MUTE and SOLO would certainly make the SIZE and LABELING of the the buttons irrelevant.
