Doing a batch render, he might get the 1st 15 or so to work, then the system will freeze up and crash. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it, as sometimes the same effect that crashed the system will render fine on re-start. Memory doesn't appear to be the issue either.

I do remember a couple of years back having a problem with Magic Bullet and Avid. If I recall correctly this would probably have been MC4 on a Windows XP system. I'm a bit hazy on the details but I think it went something like this:
Magic Bullet fails to display or render properly inside MC4
No help found on any Avid forum, but there was a mention of a similar problem in After Effects.
Installed Magic Bullet for AE and noticed the same problem.
The fix (for AE) was to disable the NVidia nView desktop manager (you'll see it in the RHS of your taskbar).
Low-and-behold it fixed the problem in MC4 as well.
As I say, it was with earlier versions of MC, AE and Magic Bullet so I don't know if the later versions of nView are responsible for your problem (assuming you have it running), but it's worth a go. Just as an extra check, Avid used to tell you to disable the Nvidia helper service in it's setup notes, so it might be worth checking this as well.
