That's interesting. I found it much tidier to open each application in a different window, then I could just zip between them with a quick tap of Apple and the window number. No cluttered overlapping windows, or applications getting in the way of one another.
It turns out (I've only been using Lion for two days) that Expose and Spaces have actually been combined into one, and the idea of Spaces lives on. Now, when you go to Mission Control and want to create a separate space for a window or app, you drag that window up to the plus sign on the top right. Hey presto, you've got another (useless?) desktop!
