Well here's what I gave them:
1) Split Screen Color Corrected vs Uncorrected
2) Desaturated
3) Desaturated, High Contrast
4) Desaturated, High Contrast & Unsharp Mask to distress the image, my favorite and I figure a word like "distressed" will make it sound artsy fartsy.
5) Desaturate, High Contrast & Heavy BCC Grain
6) A CU of a big ole steamy pile of my dog's recent stool sample to match what's between their ears. ;-)
Just kidding on number 6. It really wasn't that steamy or that much of a CU more of a medium shot. Oh well at least there's a decent image to start with so we can F it up, oh sorry Greg, "Stylize it up. And I think your right about what they might want but believe me this show ain't the shield or Southland although it is set in the Southern part of the country. I think a "Squel like a pig." effect would be more fitting. Funny thing I do like the show and think it's pretty good for the genre.

'The Shield' was 16mm - so it was naturally rough. Southland is shot on RED MX - so they have way, way more latitude. On RedUser the DIT has clearly state that the images are pristine - it's a color correction choice to make it more blown out and harsh.

Watch 'Domino' or any other Tony Scott film - think of this as a creative opportunity.

The pilot is too pretty and the image too high quality. And the arm waving bonehead suggestion from the executive peanut gallery at the network, "Can you make it look more gritty?" Well F me skipping. I'll F up the image any way you like so it matches all the other crap on your network. I do understand how a "Gritty" look, whatever that means can be used effectively in certain types of programs but this ain't one of them. This is straight forward magazine television not "Tales From The Darkside."
