> . . . Is there any factual evidence this is true?
No. And no one knows for sure until they actually announce the release/features. But mine is an educated guess, based on the fact that new features (like supported hardware) have never been implemented in previous versions of the software. Ever. Bug fixes to older versions are very common, new features added to older versions are not.
> Also, how would Avid explain that to (FCP) users with 3rd party hardware like Kona3 cards . . . that just spent $999 per seat to upgrade (cross-grade) into Media Composer . . . while keeping a proverbial straight face?
What they are offering today (and until Sep 30) is their current version of the software, with its current features and limitations. You buy into that or not.
What comes next is next. Them showing off possible new features (like they did this week) does not imply a promise to give all of that away for free to whoever is buying into their current offer.
> Avid must realize folks who already own Adobe CS 5.0/5.5 Production Premium may simply download and install update drivers for their third-party (AJA Kona 3) hardware and move in the Adobe direction.
Probably, yes. That's not something that Avid can offer today.
> Why charge a cross-grading user twice?
Because they are (and need to stay) in business. Why charge existing customers (who often paid a HELL of a lot more than 999 USD per seat) 15 times? Because if they give us new features, they need us to pay for it, so they can recoup R&D money.
These upgrades have been reasonably priced over the past few years (between 149 and 695 or so).
> I see a big risk to Avid in making such users pay twice to get their existing 3rd-party hardware up-to-speed.
Here's the deal: what Avid is offering is a cross-grade from FCP 6/7 software to Avid 5.5 software. That's what's on the table now. Hardware is not part of that deal. If you're on Matrox MXO2 Mini or AJA Io Express, those happen to be supported by Avid already.
