FCP doesn't respect Meridien as an RT codec AFAIK.
What version of FCP? If it is current enough, and he creates a new timeline, then dropping the imported QT will ask to change the sequence settings to match your source. Once this happens, if it won't play in RT, you need another codec.
FCP 7 is different from Avid in that the timeline (sequence) has the settings that affect everything that occurs in processing and playback whereas in Avid the project settings decide all of that.
If the Meridien codec won't play back in RT, export to something that will like DV. (I assume SD for offline since you mentioned Meridien?)
PS: Even the DV codec has potential issues if you are on an Avid on PC as that isn't truly supported on Mac.
(Time for my snide aside about how much "better" the file based world is) :-P
