I've come across that issue, and it's a legitimate one. It doesn't just concern number of items, but bin size can affect it, too - can certainly cause the Avid to crash if the bin size is too big: as example, working on project now, huge, HD, and even at the offline level with most media 10:1, (some clips captured at a higher rez) - cut bin size averages above 200K - in stringout cases (all acts) over 500K and these usually crash the Avid. We therefore break the shows up into separate acts, which at 200K+ level, will usually open and are manageable.
