[Avid-L2] Re: The FCPX thread

Anybody (in LA) make it down to the fcp user group meeting tonight? I had to work and didn't get a ticket. It sold out, but i figure it was a good opportunity to hear the crowd first hand - and of course Phillip, Larry, and Michael. I was thinking some Apple folks would be there, too, if they really give a damn. Anyway, if anyone went down, impressions are welcome.

And yes, it sure would be nice to see Avid moving aggressively right now. I can see some issues with it: after all, they can't be too ruthless or they might stir up some unintended consequences which I can imagine but will resist putting into print, don't need to give anyone any concrete ideas. But it would be great if they attacked the
educational market, and even re-introduced some of their recent discounts (which expired, right? just before the FCP launch) to give fcp fanboys some incentive to buy the software, and others to upgrade.

Since this thread has bounced all over, I'll just take two more paragraphs to add two more cents: kids really find FCP easier to work with? I don't understand how anyone finds it easier to work with. Granted, I started on Avid, but have had to cut on fcp often enough for so long that I switch back and forth as needed - but I prefer Avid, and for my money it's the easier program to edit on - less prone to pilot errors.`

I will say this though, if Apple busts its ass to fix Fcp, and does it quickly, what with the background rendering, the 64 bit architecture, and all that other noise that people like, it's going to be harder for Avid to compete - so I hope the programmers over there are working on the rewrite that will allow Avid to deliver some of these performance enhancements we've been hollering about for a long time. Phrase Find is great; and background rendering means fewer breaks, but if I can import and edit at the same time, export and edit at the same time, render and edit at the same time, and choose to take a break, or not, I'll be a lot happier. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
