I tend to agree with the Mercedes/Toyota analogy, as well. It just depends on what Avid needs to do to survive. If you look at Quantel and Autodesk, they have managed to evolve and in fact thrive on a business model, where market share numbers don't dictate absolute success.
Ironically, that's been Apple's position for many years when it comes to hardware and OS. Until the i-devices. I think the reason that Apple may be de-emphasizing the "traditional pro user" is precisely because this group will challenge and resist the changes. Especially if the focus has been to change what wasn't "broken". That awaits to be seen.

Agreed, but Apple has always been an exception. They have been able to destroy their creation and still be embraced by their users.

Agreed. And others, too, like Lightworks or maybe even Storm at some point down the road.
