Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Mac OS10.6.3 Heat

It's an older 17" with an intel core duo and apparently they are more
prone to whatever is causing this overheating issue or at least it
appears so from the discussions on the apple boards.

Just upgraded to 10.6.4 this AM. We'll see what it does. I normally
have it sitting flat on the desk, and hooked to an external 24" monitor,
but I've noticed that when using it as a "laptop" it gets almost too hot
to hold, and last time it crashed, it was only running Firefox and
Thunderbird. No video, no compression, no nothing but the core was at
184F, which means the video chip was even hotter. If I activate the
fan hack, (SMCFan Control) and boost the fan about 1000 rpm higher than
Mac seems to want them, then it runs fine.

Will see what happens today. I have an hour long mpeg2 to crunch, and a
bunch of off line to do at home since the kiddies are off from school.
