Philip,

Yes, I'm OK editing with a low-res proxies, which as you
correctly note requires but modest BANDWIDTH. But when I mark in on
the fly, I can't tolerate much LATENCY, which you've not mentioned.
If the "cloud" is on a fast local network, fine. But this is
difficult over the internets from the other side of the globe.
