I think we'd all have to agree that 4.0 offered some excellent new features. But, in retrospect, I wonder if we would classify the majority of them as more evolutionary -- than revolutionary (although one or two of them were obviously quite revolutionary).
One thing's for sure; a true and sustainable Avid "turnaround" will probably require a frequent succession of big and innovative splashes. If they have stockpiled enough of them to do a point release announcement at NAB -- then why not?
Maybe it's real...maybe it's not. But, I guess for somewhat selfish reasons, I'm kinda hoping it is true. I'd like to see Avid recapture some lost market share and some lost cachet.
And, as an unemployed editor, I wouldn't mind seeing something other than a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio of FCP:Avid job postings that seems ubiquitous on the Internet.
But hey...that's just me.
