In a recent interview, the grand poobah of IMAX said that their 3D
screen penetration is only a 3%, and they captured 12% of Avatar's
weekend box office receipts.

That's significant - as is the US weekly jobless claims report.

And Terry points out that 3D is bound to cannibalize the 2D releases to
some extent.

So what remains to be seen is if IMAX 3D mastering nets more than it
costs. At Avatar's current run rate, it has a slight chance. Or if a
non-theatrical business model like broadcast, with its declining ad
revenues, willl support 3D.

As I write this, Jeff Katz from Dreamworks is on 2D TV exclaiming how
much "the public" is demanding 3D. How they "REALLY" want this. What a
surprise.

Looks like the tail wagging the dog to me.

Maybe we should just take a nationwide vote on American Idol and let
that decide the matter.
