I think the biggest breakthrough with this movie had nothing to do
with 3D. It was the amazing use of the motion capture / CG work. The actors
came through so well that I found myself wondering how the heck they pulled
it off. If it wasn't for the big eyes, I would have sworn all the close-ups
were actors in makeup. It was that good.

From the little i know from back then:
(in 2006 and 2007 I've worked on Avatar, made software that kept track of TC
and clips for the MotionCapture stuff)

They shot all actors not only for motion capture, but also on SD video
(23.976 with pulldown).
Then the video was used to select good takes, as well as to see (with an
overlay) if the motion capture had worked good.
All scenes were composited from single captured actors.
I have not seen ANY actual shot from Avatar (as all went on very strict
'need to know' base), but have seen one shot of another project from the
same guy.
On that shot the actor had a zillion bubbles (transponders? No idea how they
are called) on his face alone, and quite some on his body.

now i'll have to go to the cinema, see if i made the credits :-)
