[Avid-L2] OT; Oh the joys of 3D

Job, I should acknowledge that your point is specific to theatrical
releases and the "3D experience" makes a bit more sense there, than at
home.

However, producing and displaying a good 3D movie is a far more costly
and complicated thing than doing a 5.1 mix. It only looks easy from the
users perspective in a comfy theater seat.

But my real answer to the 5.1 comparison is "been there- done that".
Every 20 years the movie system tries to sell 3D to a new generation.
If it was going to dethrone 2D, it would have by now.

It's funny that IMAX 3D is actually getting most of the credit right now
- not 3D in general. It's a different animal. It's proprietary, film
based, ultra expensive and owned by one very small company.

At a time when the US movie industry is still struggling with the basic
concept / economics of 2K/4K digital conversion, you have to wonder:
In 20011, when Joe the Plumber can sit at home with an LG OLED 60" and
watch 24/7 psuedo-3DHD programming for "free", will he make the very
expensive trip to the Real3D or IMAX3D theater?

Some folks believe that RealD 3D or IMAX3D is going to ascend to the
throne even before 2D-4K has worn the crown. I don't share that opinion.

And despite the party at CES, I expect it will be a very long time
before 3D becomes a de facto standard for TV.

Probably another 20 years.

Either way, I just hope to be there...
