kidding, it's here!).
How are people archiving this new tapeless media? As native h.264, converted
(DNxHD, ProRes), or both?
Are they conforming frame rates with CinemaTools? Using Compressor or AE for
framerate conversion?
Are you assigning Reel Numbers? What about Timecode?
I know about the upcoming Glue Tools Canon DSLR
<http://tinyurl.com/y98o622>plug-in (yay!) - which looks awesome, and
looks like it will answer many of
my questions and solve some problems, but I'm looking at the solutions we
have now.
So far, I've had to deal with a lot of FlipCam material, which is all
720/30p mpeg-4.
I assign a Job Number and Client Identifier to the project, a Camera Number
to the camera, and I use the FlipCam's numbers for the individual media
clips.
Then I run an Automator script to rename the MP4s to my specs.
Comes out like this: 29471_CCN_FlipCam_06_Clip0035.mp4 (0035 is the clip
number the FlipCam used)
Depending on the rest of the material I'm integrating it with, I'll use
Compressor to turn the files into ProRes quicktimes, either 30p or 24p
(converted).
Now the files are: 29471_CCN_FlipCam_06_Clip0035_ProRes-30p.mov
But once I'm in Final Cut, all the clips have no reel assignment, and every
clip has a starting timecode of 0:00:00:00. I would assume a similar
experience with Media Composer.
Assigning the reel in FCP is a snap, I'm guessing the same in MC.
Without a reel and a timecode, dupe detection in FCP does not work. Kind of
a bummer.
And then there is when a producer wants to send out the interviews on DVD
for transcription with timecode...
I've manually re-keyed the timecodes before, but it kind of sucks...
Some might suggest that I should send out WMVs or the original MP4s for
transcription, but I work with very few producers who are remotely capable
of telling me "I want to use the bite 45 seconds into clip Flip 06 Thirty
Five". But telling me "Go to 1:15:25 on Flip 06", is a piece of cake for all
of them.
Last thing - without a reel number, FCP will not "consolidate" a clip when
archiving - it will archive the entire original clip. Not a big deal for a
20 or 30 second clip, but when you use 20 or 30 seconds of a 10 minute clip,
that ends up being a pain.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to what the rest of you have to say about this
stuff.
TIA
