You aren't watching the kids these days. Can you make money on a tent pole film? Yes, right now. Does the studio make enough in theatrical to pay for their movies? No in general, it's the aftermarket sales that get them their.

I know how you feel, I'm the same way, but I really don't se how you are going to convince a kid to leave the HD tv with surround sound at home that he is watching a torrent downloaded version of 2012 on, to go spend 15 bucks to see it in a theater. Besides, he is also surfing the web on his laptop and talking to his buds on iChat at the same time.

So you see, he IS actually enjoying that "group experience" in his living room. It's a new world and the new generations are using it differently than we would.
